Rui Albuquerque
FLAD and the Portuguese Scientists in America

He concluded his Licenciatura Magna Cum Laude in Economics at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisboa in 1992 and his Master and PhD degrees in Economics at the University of Rochester in 1997 and 1999, in that order. He went to the USA to do his PhD in Economics, and at that time he had financial support from the Bank of Portugal and recommendations by the professors Sérgio Rebelo, Isabel Horta Correia and Pedro Teles.
He has five published articles in top academic journals and seven other in working paper format. After completing his PhD, he started his US academic career at the Simon School of Business of the University of Rochester and later on he moved to the Boston University School of Management, where he currently is.
Before his PhD, he was teaching assistant at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisboa and he worked at the Department of Economic Studies of the Bank of Portugal. At the moment he is an independent researcher with twelve completed papers in which he is the main researcher, and is also advising two students, one at a PhD level and another at a masters level.
He worked as a consultant for the World Bank in 2001 and has been a frequent referee in many scientific journals. His main goals are to produce high-quality research. He is best known for his work on financing constraints and investment choices of firms and for the work he has done on international capital flows. He has already been invited to return to Portugal but for the moment he says he “did not return for personal reasons”.
